Regenerative variable frequency drives- energy recovery offers additional improvement in efficiency
The potentials to increase energy efficiency in the industry and especially in electrical drives technology are well-known to a large circle of users, but there is still much to be done in practice. According to field surveys lot of industries are still not using speed controls for their motors and there is a huge potential in market to trap this market for energy savings. Studies by the drive specialist KIMO have shown that in applications with frequent drive switching there is still great potential for saving energy and costs. Frequency inverters of the TRANSOMIK U2-family
For these applications KIMO has developed the compact, fully regenerative frequency inverter family TRANSOMIK U2 which is available with a rated power within the range 4 to 200 kW. The active power for accelerating and driving the machine tool must by supplied by all frequency inverters. In addition, depending on the efficiency of the frequency inverter used, varying power losses occur, such as e. g.
- Losses through reactive current at cos φ < 1
- General power loss / heat loss
The braking energy of a driving machine is often wasted, i.e. with a frequency inverter heat is dissipated with a braking chopper and braking resistors. A typical waste of energy! This is where the benefits of the TRANSOMIK U2 come into play. Further to the typical functionality of a drive controller it offers the user an integrated fully regenerative feedback of the braking energy to the supply. Besides the improvement in energy efficiency by regenerative feedback of the braking energy, the function principle of this frequency inverter family offers even greater potential for raising efficiency. This results from the compact and complete design of the units including all necessary filters and chokes. This means a reduction of follow-up costs. The installation costs decrease due to less space requirement, less components and less heat dissipation.
