INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION & CONTROL TECHNO FOCUS Improving the heat recovery for ripping the benefits Heat exchangers are typically fixed pieces of equipment with virtually no knobs to turn. Fouling is the most common cause of efficiency problems. If the exchanger suffers from unexpected efficiency loss due to fouling, it’s usually a costly fix involving reduced rates and incurring a large financial loss.. Improving pump performance & life through proper seal attention Without effective seals, contaminants (solid or liquid) can find openings to infiltrate both the lubricant and bearings leading to potentially dire consequences impacting both the cleanliness and integrity of the lubricant and the life of the bearing.. Static mixers : The best choice Options include just letting materials mingle naturally, using pipe fittings to spur contact, and installing static mixers, spray nozzles or spargers. Static mixers now dominate pipeline mixing — but that doesn’t mean they’re always the best choice. The term “pipeline mixing” covers mixing of materials in a flowing line downstream of a junction. The mixing may involve miscible liquids, immiscible liquids and multi-phase mixtures.. Minimising pump & compressor errors for better profitability Flow recorders could provide a pump flow profile but it’s much easier to use simple trigonometry to calculate piston positions versus crank angles, then calculate piston travel per degree of crank rotation and plot the results. Piston-type pumps, compressors and engines usually are driven by a crank and connecting rod. During the stroke, flow rates don’t follow the sinusoidal curve that textbooks and manufacturers’ literature often cite. Storage tank safety : A critical process component No item of equipment is involved in more accidents than the storage tank, probably because storage tanks are fragile and easily damaged by slight overpressure and vacuum. Fortunately, the majority of accidents involving tanks do not cause injury, but they do cause damage, loss of material and interruption of production.. Reducing time delay in analytical system Using a regulator is one way to address time delay. Regulators control pressure, which in an analytical system closely correlates with time. For gas systems with a controlled flow rate, the lower the pressure, the shorter the time delay. Process measurements are instantaneous but analyzer responses never are. There’s always a time delay from tap to analyzer. Unfortunately, this delay, which represents the time a sample takes to reach the analyzer, often is underestimated or misunderstood. Understanding the simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography An SMB process approaches the efficiency of a true countercurrent solid/liquid process while avoiding problems associated with particle movement. Compared to standard pulse injection (batch) chromatography, SMB operation minimizes product dilution and maximizes productivity of separation media. Simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography is a well-established separation and purification technique useful in commodity and specialty chemical manufacturing. Upgrading a centrifugal compressor If a compressor is oversized for the current application, it can be upgraded to a reduced flow and pressure instead of operating inefficiently. To fully understand the reason for the efficiency loss associated with oversized capacity, it is important to understand how a centrifugal compressor operates.
