MACHINE TOOLS TECHNOFOCUS Understanding CNC collet chucks A CNC collet chuck mounts to the working side of a CNC lathe spindle in the same manner as a three-jaw chuck and uses the machine’s existing hydraulic cylinder and drawtube for actuation. Right workholding for right job An efficient manufacturing process requires good machine selection, proper cutting tools and the right workholding. The first two areas typically receive substantial consideration, but work holding is often overlooked. The correct workholding selection can increase manu -facturing process stability, efficiency and safety. Achieving the untended operation success Successful untended operation requires that the shop consider every aspect of the machining process to ensure that the operation runs smoothly. After all, if anything goes wrong when there is no one on site to correct the problem, production either comes to a halt or, worse, creates more scrap than parts. Bar feeders & workpiece surface finish : The synergy With increased pressure on productivity and in these days of lean manufacturing, no one wants to add steps to their process because the surface finish was marred during the turning operation. Bar puller : Knowing the technology Standard bar pullers use two spring-steel fingers to provide the gripping force. During setup, the serrated jaws on the fingers are gapped a bit smaller than bar diameter (typically 1/8 inch smaller). Bar feeding system : Playing the vital role The ability to machine parts with little or no intervention essentially machining labor-free is one course many shops are pursuing. However, this often requires a change in technology that enables reliable operation of the machine tools and their accessories. Short magazine bar loaders : The efficient proposition In the past 10 years the top spindle speed of most CNC lathes has increased significantly, and it is now common to exceed 6,000 rpm on a lathe with 2 ½ inch diameter bar capacity. Bar feeder selection : The real challenge If the new CNC lathe will be used primarily for short-run work with frequent setup changes, the spindle-length bar feeder is the more logical choice. On such bar feeders, the entire length of the bar is fed into the lathe spindle at the onset. Guide bushing : Achiveing the accuracy The guide bushing helps to provide rigidity of the part. But for shorter parts, a precision collet is typically all that is necessary for part support, and a guide bushing only adds to the complexity of setups and the stock needed to run the job. CAM selection : Choosing the criteria Historically the domain of the CNC milling world, PC-based CAM has finally evolved to point where it can help shops make the leap to programming multi-axis Swiss-type lathes and turn-mill centers in a cost-effective manner.
