AUTOMATION SECTION
TECHNOLOGY TRENDS
SCADA : Gaining the recognition in process technology
Usually controlling these processes is simple, involving measuring flows or temperatures, monitoring alarms, opening or closing valves, turning motors on or off, opening or closing switches, and adjusting set points on controllers located near the process. While this control is simple, it is usually very important. Also, the speed with which we respond to information about these processes is not critical the response time is not urgent.
Wireless telemetry : The new wave
Fifteen years ago, even the more advanced automation systems seldom used wireless telemetry. And if they did, the data throughput was low and rarely provided the coverage necessary to link all remote sites. As a result, the usefulness of the technology was limited when monitoring only a portion of the sites remotely was possible.
Process instrumentation cabling : Adopting the right approach
Modern digital instruments prove to be more sensitive to noise and interferences when compared with the old analog instrumentation devices. In addition, modern control systems are also more sensitive to any signal distortion when compared with old single loop controllers.
Ethernet : Application in modern manufacturing
While Ethernet and the TCP/IP suite are inherently non-deterministic protocols, it is possible to use them for real-time industrial networks. The development of high-speed Ethernet interfaces, switched network infrastructures, and specialized TCP/IP network stacks have allowed a multitude of industrial Ethernet protocols to operate in the millisecond range.
Industrial robots : The vital applications
A human operator located hundreds of miles away in the process control center supervises all three. The human supervisor has defined and initiated the maintenance tasks in response to a condition-based monitoring report generated by the automation system. With overall responsibility for safety, the operator instructs the automation system to reschedule the subtasks.
Industrial wireless networks : Evaluating the reliapbility
Open industrial wireless networks require wireless networking appliances that seamlessly integrate wireless sensor network gateways based on either ISA100.11a or WirelessHART standards with 802.11 (WiFi) radios to support other industrial wireless applications such as mobility, location, video, and communications and to enable efficient backhaul of sensor data wirelessly.
PUMPS & VALVES SECTION
TECHNO FOCUS
Achieving the pump efficiencies
Selecting the pump technology for a specific liquid or range of liquids sometimes comes down to budgeting considerations. It may be like picking a utility fielder because of his salary instead of an All-Star third baseman.
Understanding metering pumps
Metering pumps consist of a solenoid drive or a gearbox with motor, control mechanism and pump head with valves to control the flow direction through which the liquid pumped enters the inlet connection and exits the discharge connection.
Aligning vertical pumps :The need
Aligning this equipment to precision alignment tolerances will produce the same benefits that have long been proven to occur with horizontal drive machines, such as extended equipment life, increased efficiency and reduced vibration levels.
Choosing right pressure gauge
Ambient temperature may affect the accuracy and integrity of the gauge. Gauges are available either temperature compensated or non-temperature compensated. Ambient conditions may require that the gauge be isolated from temperature extremes
Controlling resonance in pump systems
Resonance in a mechanical system is a vibration of high amplitude caused by a relatively small stimulus of the same period as the natural vibration period of the system. In other words, it is the vibration that results when any object composed of an elastic material is subjected to its "natural" vibrational frequency.
Bearing replacement: Adopting the right technique
The process of dismounting bearings can be a hazardous and demanding task often involving powerful forces, and care must be taken not to damage other machine components, such as the shaft or housing. No matter how tempting, operators should avoid using welding torches or hammer blows to dismount a bearing.
Acceleration head for centrifugal pumps
If a centrifugal pump is started with the discharge valve open too far and with a low discharge pressure, the liquid in the suction line may accelerate at a rate that causes the suction pressure to drop below vapor pressure. In other words, you can cause cavitation by allowing the pumpage to accelerate too rapidly in the suction line.
